The Dominican Republic has received high marks and a public commendation for its handling of the debt renegotiations required by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The ceremony took place in London and the distinction was accepted by Temistocles Montas, the Presidential Minister for Technical Affairs. The Dominican Republic received the prize "Debt Negotiation of the Year" from the financial publication Trade Finance in London. The country was praised for the manner in which it established an on-going dialogue and friendly manner during the negotiations of the US$180 million debt with private banking institutions. Also present during the awards ceremony were Julio Ortega Tous, the executive secretary of the National Commission for Commercial Negotiations, lawyer Luis Rafael Pellerano, and Manuel A. Grullon, the president of Banco Popular Dominicano.
