The 230th anniversary of the United States' independence was celebrated at the National Theater's Main Hall during a function led by US Ambassador Hans Hertell, his wife Marie Hertell, and Vice President Rafael Alburquerque, who spoke on behalf of the two nations. Hertell read a message from US President George W. Bush. The national anthems of both countries were sung by Dominican soprano Claudia Sierra accompanied by pianist Omar Ubri. The evening was closed by the Doreen's Jazz New Orleans, whose leader, the talented clarinetist Doreen Ketchen, is known as the "queen of Jazz". Recognition awards were presented to Msgr. Agripino Nunez Collado, Mary Perez de Marranzini and Rafael Molina Morillo, as well as Supreme Court of Justice President Jorge Subero Isa, for their contributions to the development of democracy and society. Also recognized were American citizens Kate Jordan Wallace, Bob and Ellen Snow, Elizabeth Conklin-Ballester and Rigil-Kent Ballester for their work in support of Dominican communities and institutions.
