Venezuelan multi-millionaire banker Victor Vargas Irasquin may purchase a Dominican bank, according to a 2 July report by El Nuevo Herald. The name of the bank has not been not disclosed. Irasquin "has investments in the oil sector and is currently in the process of purchasing a bank in Panama and another in the Dominican Republic, where he has a mansion and controls luxury housing constructions in La Romana" says 1999 Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, Colombian Gerardo Reyes. The article describes the luxurious lifestyle of this banker who transports his thoroughbred horses on special airplanes from the United States to Spain to participate in polo tournaments with his son-in-law, Luis Alfonso de Borbon, the Duke of Anjou. Last year he flew 80 horses to Spain. At 54, Irasquin is one of the most prosperous bankers in Hugo Chavez's Venezuela. He owns the Banco Occidental de Descuento (BOD), the fifth largest bank in the country.
