During a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, President Leonel Fernandez promised to make the Dominican Republic a point of support for Japan to introduce its products to the US market under better conditions once DR-CAFTA is in effect. President Fernandez has made the same proposal to heads of state he met in Taiwan and South Korea.

According to Presidency web site, Fernandez explained that in a globalized world, the distance between two countries should not be an obstacle to enjoying excellent relations. Both statesmen agreed that closer channels should be opened to encourage collaboration between both nations.

Koizumi offered cooperation for the implementation of technology systems to strengthen Dominican state institutions, and offered aid to solve the country's energy problem.

Koizumi also addressed the issue of Japanese immigrants who arrived in the Dominican Republic in the 1950s, and who are demanding compensation from the Japanese government. Recently, a court in Japan dismissed the case for having expired.

Fernandez offered support for Japan's aspirations to a seat in the United Nations Security Council.

President Fernandez also visited SONY enterprises where he received a demonstration of the camera system used for surveillance in cities and assured that the use of this system would contribute to the Democratic Security Plan. He also visited the NEC information technology multinational with the objective of obtaining essential information to strengthen the e-government project.

Most popular ball player, Sammy Sosa was also present for the meeting with the prime minister.
