Civil Defense, the Dominican rescue corps that was the first to arrive to Haiti, reports that it has assisted in the rescue of more than 200 earthquake victims from rubble, recovered 600 corpses, and provided medical assistance to 1,600 people, in addition to transferring 250 injured to medical centers in the DR and Haiti. Over 1,000 Dominican civil defense volunteers have traveled to Haiti since 13 January.
In the first week, an estimated 1,000 relief flights landed at the La Isabela (Santo Domingo) and Barahona's Maria Montez International airports with relief supplies for Haiti. An estimated 150 flights a day are being handled, as reported in Hoy.
Hoy adds that the Presidency Social Plan maintains the distribution of an average of 82,000 cooked meals from 19 mobile kitchens to Haitians, military and international volunteers since 13 January. The National Potable Water Institute (INAPA) has provided around 675,000 gallons of drinking water from the DR to Haiti. Furthermore, INAPA has prepared a well in San Miguel in Port-au-Prince to supply the Dominican government water tank trucks that distribute water to the population.
In Jacmel on the south coast, the Navy has transported and distributed thousands of gallons of water.
Listin Diario reports that almost 4,000 Dominicans have been working in humanitarian aid in Haiti since the 12 January earthquake.
The National Business Council (Conep) estimates Dominican aid to Haiti from businesses to be around US$17 million. This includes a donation of US$5 million from the Vicini group, the largest in the DR.
Foreign Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso traveled to Montreal on Saturday and took part in Monday's summit of donor nations on Haiti.
