Honduran President Porfirio Lobo traveled to the DR and met with President Leonel Fernandez on Wednesday, 21 January. They signed an agreement for the political reconciliation in Honduras. With the signing of the agreement, President Leonel Fernandez recognizes the government of President-elect Lobo that takes office on 27 January. Previously, President Fernandez had been a strong advocate of restoring Manuel Zelaya to the presidency of Honduras.
President Fernandez told journalists that he would travel to Honduras for the inaugural, with Foreign Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso. Returning with them would be ousted President Manuel Zelaya who has agreed to the proposed solution of the DR granting him safe passage. De-facto governor Roberto Micheletti will give up the presidential seat without resigning to give way to elected President Porfirio Lobo, who is due to take office on 27 January. The negotiated agreement is seen as an international diplomacy success for President Leonel Fernandez.
As reported in Listin Diario, President-elect Porfirio Lobo thanked President Fernandez for his efforts for peace and brotherhood with Honduras. Zelaya plans to move to the DR with his family. Zelaya has been living at the Brazilian Embassy in Tegucigalpa for the past four months. News reports, nevertheless, indicate that Santo Domingo will be a temporary stop for Manuel Zelaya who is then expected to travel on to Mexico City.
Neither de-facto President Roberto Micheletti nor Manuel Zelaya will take part in the swearing in ceremony. The Honduran Constitution establishes that the new President is sworn in by the president of the Senate. Lobo said that Manuel Zelaya would from now on be treated as a former President of Honduras.
President Fernandez had previously scored diplomatic points with his reconciliation between Colombian President Alvaro Uribe and Hugo Chavez of Venezuela during a Rio Group meeting in March 2008.
