No not that cable, the thieves are stealing electric cables by the kilometer and this is causing losses worth millions of pesos for the electricity distribution companies. At a meeting with Public Works Minister Freddy Perez, members of the Santo Domingo city council and the Assistant Attorney General, representatives from the distributors told of losing kilometers of electricity cables that were then sold either as scrap or to hardware stores. The Mayor of Santo Domingo, Roberto Salcedo reported that 72 traffic lights have been vandalized and the replacement cost will exceed RD$20 million. According to representatives from Ede-Este, the company had to replace twelve kilometers of electric cable at a cost of over US$120,000. A sergeant in the navy was surprised in the act of cutting electric cables for the purpose of selling the metal. The electricity companies demanded the assistance of the police and the Attorney General's office, since their own supervisors were not equipped to handle such thievery.
