The director for Central and South America in the Taiwanese foreign ministry, Jai-son Ko, told reporters from Diario Libre that sugar, coffee, amber and wooden crafts are items with very strong potential in the Taiwanese marketplace. He reminded that there are 23 million people in Taiwan. The diplomat also pointed out that the signing of a free trade agreement between the two nations would be highly beneficial for both nations, and he pointed out that there are such agreement with Nicaragua, Guatemala and Panama. Ko said that one year after signing the agreement with Panama, their exports to Taiwan grew by 130%. Ambassador Ko also pointed out two interesting statistics: the Taiwanese consume more than US$400 million in coffee, and Taiwan is a major exporter to other countries in the Far East. Taiwan does not produce a pound of coffee itself because there is not sufficient land available for the crop. There is currently a US$90 million trade imbalance between the two countries.
