The deputies who lost in the last elections will win, and big. Last night the Chamber of Deputies approved pensions amounting to 80% of their salaries (RD$116,000) for the deputies who lost their seats in last May's elections. The necessary legislation was written by the president of the Chamber, Alfredo Pacheco. It was introduced on Monday and declared to be urgent. It did not have to go to a commission for study, either. After approval of a whole list of pensions, the Chamber of Deputies has to send the bill to the Senate for final approval and then it goes on to the President for his signature. Among those receiving pensions are Licelotte Marte de Barrios and Anibal Paez, Felipa Gomez. Victor Garcia Sued, and others. The bill now passes to the Senate and then will require the signature of President Fernandez. Most of the ousted legislators are from the PRD party. Their term expires on 16 August. The new Congress will be made up of a majority of ruling PLD party legislators.
