More than 2,900 articles are supposed to get a 13% tax reduction as of 1 July. Therefore, according to Finance Minister Vicente Bengoa, prices should go down accordingly as stocks are taken from warehouses. Flowers, baby foods, appliances, foods, personal care products, liquor and clothing are among the items that are now subject to 13% less tax. In spite of this, Minister Bengoa said that the government has no way of bringing about price cuts that should result from lower taxes. Quoted in Diario Libre, businessman Ernesto Vilalta estimated that prices could fall even further, in the range of 15%-16% given the removal of the consular invoice.
