President Leonel Fernandez was scheduled to leave for Honduras in a private jet from the San Isidro Air Base early this morning. He is traveling to attend the inauguration ceremony for the new Honduran government, led by President-elect Porfirio Lobo ("Pepe Lobo" in the popular press). Accompanying Fernandez will be Foreign Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso, Presidential Minister Cesar Pina Toribio, Press Officer Rafael Nunez and other officials. Fernandez returns later today. He is expected to travel back to the DR with the former President of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya, who was deposed last June. According to Diario Libre, Zelaya will host a press conference upon his arrival.
Fernandez was one of the leading critics of the coup d'etat in Honduras that ousted Zelaya, and his sudden decision to go to Honduras has led to speculation. According to the Presidential press office, after attending the swearing-in ceremony, Fernandez will go to the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa where Zelaya has been staying, and then both men will fly to the Dominican Republic in the President's jet. Heads of state from Guatemala, Panama and Taiwan are also attending the inauguration.
