The nation has a million and a half quintals (1qq = 100lbs) available for export and a strategic reserve of 5.5 million quintals as the result of the record harvest of 12,155,401 quintals last year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. The increase in rice production and other food products is attributed to farmers' confidence in the Leonel Fernandez government, says the Ministry. At the start of 2010, the Dominican Republic has not only sufficient rice, but also plenty of the other principal foodstuffs that go into the national food basket, including plantains and bananas, cassava, sweet potatoes, potatoes, garden vegetables, and poultry and eggs.
