The National Police has arrested and arraigned 3 men in connection with last Thursday's murder of engineer Wilson Alejandro Amparo Luna in a case of mistaken identity. They apparently confused him with Winston Rizik Rodriguez, a cockfighting enthusiast. The men arrested are Victor Alfonso Damian Rojas (a.k.a. "Residente"), Jonathan Rafael Caro Perez (a.k.a. "Cuto") and Luis Kaury Frias Lafontaine. The Police also seized two 9mm pistols and the motorcycle used in the killing.
According to the Police version of the case, the arrested men said that they had been contracted by Frias Lafontaine on orders from Franklin Diaz Medina and Domingo Concepcion Brito Miranda. Both men are said to be fugitives, as is Kederlin Antonio Bencosme who drove the motorcycle. The National Police say that the motive for the mistaken killing and later attempted killing of Rizik Rodriguez was a "settling of accounts."
Rizik Rodriguez escaped from a high security prison in Florida and has an arrest warrant out for his capture by the United States authorities.
In 1995 he was tried for a series of drug trafficking operations. In 1997, the National Drug Control Department (DNCD) accused him of leading a gang together with fugitive Ramon Antonio del Rosario Puente (Tono Lena) who tried to bring in 1,407lbs of marijuana and 16kg of cocaine.
