The 27 defendants in the Paya massacre case have all pleaded "not guilty" and demanded the return of their seized assets. The judge of the National District First Court of Instruction has set 23 February as the date he will hand down his decision and reveal which of the accused of the massacre of 7 Colombians and the theft of a 1,300kg cocaine consignment will be going on trial for the killings and which of them will receive a decree of "lack of evidence" and be set free as requested by the defense. Yesterday's 6-hour session included statements from 17 of the defendants. The defense argued that the prosecutors had neither established guilt nor supplied sufficient proof to indict their clients. The prosecutors maintained their stance that all 17 accused should be sent to a definitive trial for the massacre and theft of the cocaine.
