The DR women's volleyball team has defeated Peru in the Pan American Volleyball Cup qualifying round in San Juan, Puerto Rico, winning the right to compete in the Grand Prix 2007. The Dominican team defeated Peru 25-21, 25-18 and 25-13. Annerys Vargas led the Dominicans with 12 points, including five blocks, and Milagros Cabral had 10. Cindy Rondon added 9 and Cosiris Rodriguez and Nurys Arias each had 8.

"The reception was the key for us today," said Miguel Beato Cruz, the Dominican coach. "We improved that part of our game and it allowed us to set the attack very well. We reached the first goal of qualifying for the Grand Prix and now we will prepare for Cuba tomorrow," added the Dominican coach as reported on the FIVB website.

This is the 5th time the DR takes part in the Grand Prix, regarded as the leading volleyball competition in the world with a prize purse of US$1 million. The event will be held in several Asian cities and 16 countries will participate.

Brazil, Cuba and the US also won the right to represent the Americas, along with the DR, in the 2007 FIVB World Grand Prix.

The DR is ranked 11th in the world. To follow volleyball activity, see http://www.fivb.org
