Judge Elka Reyes Olivo has sent Plutarco Ernesto Gonzalez, accused of killing comedian Milton Pelaez, to La Victoria Prison at the request of the District Attorney's Department. The alleged killer must spend a three-month jail term until the case comes to trial. Lawyers for the Pelaez family, Carlos Balcacer and Carlos Olivares plan to accuse Plutarco's wife Graciela de Gonzalez and a stepson known as Fersobe, of covering up the crime. Both were questioned by police and will be questioned again today. Police determined that the firearm was shot at a maximum distance of five centimeters from Pelaez's body, destroying the vital organs and causing his death. Gonzalez, who served in the police force between 1978 and 1981 was carrying a Luger CZ75 9-caliber pistol with a legal permit. The incident took place on Rodriguez Urdaneta St. in the Santo Domingo neighborhood of Gazcue. The alleged killer reportedly owed Pelaez RD$450,000.
News reports say that the killing occurred when Pelaez visited Gonzalez after the latter did not fulfill an agreement to endorse a vehicle of his to Pelaez as a debt guarantee. Interestingly, earlier, his wife Graciela de Gonzalez had resigned from her job at Banco de Progreso, agreeing to leave without severance pay, despite 15 years of service. Clave Digital speculates that she was probably asked to resign or face jail after evidence of irregularities was found in her handling of Milton Pelaez's account at the bank.
The case has again focused attention on the need for more arms control. Milton Pelaez's daughter has called for a move to disarm the civilian population.
