Finance Minister Vicente Bengoa was in Washington, DC this week to sign a US$25 million program aimed at improving employability and providing skills for earning opportunities for at-risk youth from the country's poorest households. Pamela Cox, vice president for Latin America and the Caribbean, signed on behalf of the World Bank. The Youth Development Program provides training courses and internships designed to promote entrepreneurship and self-employment, particularly in rural areas of the country where there are few salaried job opportunities. The program also includes a capacity building component aimed at helping the Ministry of Labor and the National Institute for Professional Technical Training (INFOTEP) to support this segment of the population, and strengthens the Ministry of Education's Second Chance Basic Education for Adults and Secondary Education for Adults for school dropouts educational programs.
