If "home is where the heart is" then I must be in Hell. I arrived "home" from the DR on Jan 24th having been there since the 17th. I've been in a deep depression since I got on the plane "home". They had to put me on the plane at gunpoint! Well not really but the security guards did pull the sobbing chica off of me so I could go to the boarding lounge. I had already emailed my resignation to my boss from the Blue Dolphin. Good thing he knows my sense of humour. I had an even better time than I planned.

I had done much lurking and had been in touch via email to many before my trip. This was to be my first but defiantly not my last trip to the DR. I actually booked a second week off to return to Sosua before I left. I knew this was my kind of town! I planned on the usual 3 chicas per day, sleep late, fuck all night, 8 days in paradise kind of a trip. Most of that was reality, but not all.

Marco from Rocky's picked me up at the airport. I was 30 minutes early and he was already there! What a great guy! Went back to Rocky's and had a couple of drinks to get into relaxation mode.

Rocky's is a great place and if you don't mind basic accommodation I would recommend it with few reservations. After I got settled in I went for a walking tour of Sosua.

I had downloaded maps of Sosua with all the clubs, bars, restaurants, etc… on them but the truth is that Sosua is such a small place you really don't need them. Most of the locals can help you if you can't find something but I had no trouble at all.

The DR really is a 3rd world country. That is to say, forget building codes and safety regulations, as you know them. They do not apply here. The roads have high curbs and huge, deep potholes and the sidewalks are almost impossible to navigate in some places. Add to that the crazy drivers and the dozens (hundreds) of motorcycles and it was worth your life to be careless crossing the street. You do not have the right-of-way!

I managed to find and visit all of the places I had on my list that first day including Latin Club, High Carribe, The Flamingo, Plaza Sosua, The Blue Dolphin and The Palace to name a few. I had a beer at the Palace Saturday ffternoon but not much seemed to be happening. I asked to see John but apparently he was not around. Soronji was bartending and tried to convince me to go with her. She was very pregnant so I passed. Yahaira was also there and quite persistant but she does not do it for me. I never did get back there. Perhaps next time.

Although I was staying at Rocky's, I found my home at the Blue Dolphin. Early Sunday afternoon I wandered in and met Steve, one of the owners. He bought me a drink and showed me around. I didn't get to see the suites then because they were all full. I hung around for a while and met a bunch of well know guys as well as the other owner John. Steve and John were very helpful and generous with their time and in other ways. My trip would not have been as anywhere near as great as it was if I hadn't met them!

Then things fell apart. I met nomad! What a maniac. I owe this guy so large I`ll be buying him Cuba Libres forever. He introduced me to everyone and showed me the inside track on the town. I even ended up doing his cousin… It's nice to have family.

Y MAGNUM! Thanks for letting me off so lightly

After that my days were pretty routine:

Get up; eat breakfast at Rocky's or La Roca. Go to the Dolphin, meet Don and the gang, have a drink. Go to the beach, stop at Roger and Mav's Bar and have a drink or three, then on to the Shark Bar. End up at Siempre Sol, Herman's bar.

(This was my second home. This guy knows how to make you feel welcome. I was there for 6 days in a row and everyday was better.)

Go back to the Dolphin and get the girls. Have a few drinks. Go out to one of the many fine restaurants and then to a club. Go to the hotel, get laid all night and again in the morning….

Repeat often

All in all a great first trip. Returning to Canada was HELL as my heart and spirit stayed in the Dominican republic!

'man,

Thanks for the memories. Damn it seems like it was so long ago. I miss hanging with Nomad. One of these days he will be back.

Gotta love seeing Stephanie again!

I spoke with that soandso a few weeks ago and he is still in Texas. He is doing well. I had to tell him about some of the BS rumors I heard about him through the Sosua sewer line. People just have nothing better to do with their lives. At least he can take a joke!

I met many good people while in Sosua, too many to remember them all at this time and some that I only know their real names. Consequently I'll not list them here. You know who you are...and thank you.

This trip was my first major step and the "best thing I've ever done"!

I feel your pain Apost it's surprising how quickly you can become attached to a the Dr. I remember my first trip (landed in STI) on the way to Sosua I thought I had just made the BIGGEST mistake of my life. Now I realize the biggest mistake of my life was not discovering this gem many years ago.

Great report man.....
