[DR1] Church blames consumer ads

The coordinator of the Catholic Church's Youth Outreach Program has sharply criticized the fact that the nation's youth are constantly bombarded by what he termed "consumption driven advertisements". Father Lorenzo Vargas attributed the rising violence and crime rate to the publicity directed at young people. The cleric criticized the fact that the media has sold the idea that crime and violence are a result of a lack of family values. Father Vargas said that "this is not the case. This (the violence and crime) is due to the influence of the bombardment of consumer driven advertising directed at our young people."
