[DR1] Police take over Bonao

The small city of Bonao, located about halfway between Santiago and Santo Domingo, was the scene of so much crime and violence that the nation's police chief, General Bernardo Santana Paez has ordered the removal of the entire police detachment and its substitution by new police units. According to Listin Diario, the police have taken over the streets and avenues of the city, and are pulling people in for questioning and checking vehicles in an attempt to calm the local population. Santana Paez called for a "house cleaning" and called upon the citizens to denounce any crooked cops they saw. In an unprecedented move, the police chief removed all the staff working at the local police headquarters, and blasted them for their negligence. In just one day last week there were ten robberies in Bonao and many people accused policemen of being the perpetrators. In fact, a trader, Yodesy Marte, was on his way to the police station to report the people who had just robbed his business when he was killed, allegedly by two policemen who later "escaped" from the headquarters, and are being looked for in connection with the crime.
