[DR1] Hertell & Fernandez discuss DR-CAFTA

United States Ambassador Hans Hertell and Dominican President Leonel Fernandez held a two-hour meeting on Friday where the topic of the conversation was the DR-CAFTA trade agreement. According to Hertell, Fernandez is most interested in getting the trade agreement under way. Hertell said that both nations are working towards that end and that he was confident that things would get started "very quickly." The ambassador later spoke to reporters about the pharmaceutical issues that, as he says, are "distorting" the free trade agreement. He called the process "a campaign pushed by the local pharmaceutical industry that tries to sell the idea that DR-CAFTA will cause job losses." According to the US representative, the local pharmaceutical industry is trying to influence the process by saying that the poor will not have access to medicines, and "this is just not true."
