The Ministry of Industry and Commerce announced fuel price hikes of RD$1.00 for premium, RD$4.60 for regular and RD$1.40 for diesel this weekend. Even though the Dominican Republic buys most of its petroleum products from Venezuela and Mexico, the price of gasoline is pegged to the price of West Texas Intermediate. The new prices yet again represent historic highs for gasoline and diesel.

As a result of the continual price increases over the last few weeks, the transportation unions have agreed to a RD$1.00 fare increase after a great deal of government lobbying. The fare increase lowers the probability of a transportation strike this summer.

The fare increase, nevertheless, will not be applied by the government OMSA buses, nor on Conatra and Fenatrano bus syndicate routes also operated by OMSA buses.

Most public transport vehicles operate on subsidized propane fuel, nevertheless, which sells for RD$47.11 the gallon. Non-subsidized fuel, for commercial use, sells for RD$68.98 the gallon.
