The Central Electoral Board (JCE) has declared the formal launch of the campaign for the congressional and municipal elections, described as the most complex in the history of Dominican elections. This is attributed to the increased number of posts up for election, the new elective positions that have been added and the changes in the electoral system.
On 16 May, some 4,036 elective positions will be decided upon by voters at congressional and municipal levels in the case the 5 national deputies by accumulation of votes are included. This year there will be 3,898 voting centers nationwide. The electoral stats show that 3,092,201 are eligible to vote, for 50.56% of total voters. Men voter universe is 3,024,196 (49.44%), or 3,024,196.
During the formal ceremony to open the campaign, president of the Central Electoral Board Julio Cesar Castanos Guzman said that the 2010 elections would be decided by voters ages 18 to 35 that make up almost 42% of voters, or 2,542,835 voters.
Voters will choose 32 senators, 178 deputies, 5 deputies at large, 155 mayors, 155 deputy mayors, 1,149 city council members, 1,148 substitutes for the council members, 229 directors of Municipal Districts, 715 members of the municipal district boards, 20 deputies to Parlacen and the same number of substitutes.
JCE president Julio Cesar Castanos Guzman recently urged the political parties and their candidates to refrain from using inappropriate language in the campaign, no insults or disqualifications of adversaries, because the people want to hear proposals.
