The Ministry of Public Works had given the go-ahead for the construction of an airport in the northeast, but the Ministry of the Environment denied the permit because the land chosen for the site was situated between two rivers.
Aristides Fernandez Zucco, the director of the Airports Department said that the Ministry of the Environment objected to the construction of the airport in San Francisco de Macoris because it would affect two important rivers in the area.
Fernandez Zucco said that the Multiple Airport of the Northeast would be constructed with resources from the state and that its cost would be around RD$150 to RD$200 million. Another problem that needs to be resolved is the litigation affecting the lands that were supposed to be used for the airport as well as the fact that the government does not have the money to pay for the relocation of the local residents.
The Ministry of Public Works had issued a "No Objection" resolution for the construction based on soil studies and the design specifications on the structure and the runway. In industrial circles in Santiago, it has been commented that the project should be implemented privately, like the Cibao International Airport, due to the bad experiences that the state has had with this type of investment.
