Ambassador Todd Kuiack has announced the opening of a consular office at the Acropolis Center offices of the Canadian Embassy. He said the office has now been in operation for 2 weeks, as reported in Listin Diario. Up till now, visa documentation for Dominicans used to be sent to Haiti for processing.
Kuiack said that he was impressed by the leading role the Dominican government had played in providing humanitarian aid to Haiti and that the embassy was working on relief programs with local authorities. He confirmed that Canada would be present at the world summit for the recovery of Haiti that will take place in Santo Domingo on 14 April.
The ambassador also praised Barrick Gold, the mining company that has the contract to exploit the Pueblo Viejo gold resources near Cotui. He says that the operation would create 3,000 direct jobs and 15,000 indirect jobs in the area.
