The judge investigating the case of the 10 US citizens accused of trying to take 33 Haitian children out of the country has authorized their release, according to Haitian radio station Radio Metropole. Judge Bernard Saint-Vil said he signed the requirement for the release of the 10 missionaries, and that according to Haitian law, he sent it to the prosecutors who can only emit opinions but cannot annul the decree.
The Americans, 5 men and 5 women belong to a Baptist organization "New Life Children's Home" and they were detained at the end of January while on their way to the Dominican Republic in a bus with the children, who are aged between 2 to 12 years of age. According to Saint-Vil, the parents and relatives of the children said that they had given the children to the Americans so that they could be cared for. The judge has not disclosed whether or not the accused are or will be allowed to leave the country.
