The justice system as interpreted by the courts in San Cristobal is in the public eye and under strong attack, according to El Nuevo Diario. Some of their decisions have been described as "shameful", especially after the Court of Appeals decision to release former colonel Pablo Manuel Velasquez who had received a 20-year sentence for planning and ordering the murder of Jose Miguel Herran Mancebo.
San Cristobal Senator Tommy Galan has asked the Head of the Supreme Court to remove the judge of instruction Regina Carvajal who supposedly committed irregularities in the discharge of her duties. The senator said that the people of San Cristobal are embarrassed by the latest decision by the judges. And even though Dominican Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez did not refer directly to the case, he openly criticized the ease with which people who break the law can be released, while at the same time pointing out that the Penal Process Code is very benign and was imposed by international organizations.
