A Frenchman who was captured by the National Drug Control Department (DNCD) in possession of an assault rifle and several items only used by drug traffickers is a fugitive from French justice where he was requested for extradition to be tried for several crimes. But it has still not been decided whether or not he will be handed over since he was naturalized as a Dominican some time ago.
The fugitive, Akca Soner, is known as "The Frenchman", and the DNCD said that he was the head of a gang that recruited "mules" to send cocaine to Europe, some of whom are in jails in Puerto Plata and Najayo. Several people were mentioned in connection with this individual.
DNCD spokesman Roberto Lebron confirmed that the extradition request was filed by the Paris Appeals Tribunal in March 2009 on this individual to face charges of cocaine trafficking.
When Soner was picked up he was found with an M-16-A2 assault rifle, a weapon no civilian is permitted to own. He could not produce any documents on the weapon or explain the RD$360,000 in cash that was found in his possession. Also found was a package of 21 cell phones, 43 shells for the assault rifle, two false-bottomed suitcases, a scale used by drug traffickers for weighing cocaine, a shrink-wrap machine and a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck.
