Delegations from Haiti and the Dominican Republic met with President Leonel Fernandez and Haitian Prime Minister Jean Max Bellerive in Santo Domingo yesterday and set out guidelines for short-term reconstruction plans for Haiti. Both countries agreed that the priorities for the new Haitian capital would be the construction of new schools, housing and secure food sources. The agreement will be proposed to delegates of the US, Japan, Canada, France and the European Union in a meeting scheduled for Santo Domingo on 17 and 18 March. According to Listin Diario, it was also agreed that the World Conference on Haiti's Future would be delayed until 2 June, to allow time for a mini-summit at the United Nations in New York on 31 March.
The meeting was hosted by Minister of Economy, Planning and Development Temistocles Montas and was later attended by President Fernandez. "This meeting is evidence of the strengthening of relations between the Dominican and Haitian people and another example of the great solidarity shown by President Fernandez's government", said the Prime Minister of Haiti, as quoted in Hoy.
