With the inauguration of a modern Command and Control Center for viewing satellite images from the radars that were acquired along with the Super Tucano aircraft and the purchase of equipment to strengthen frontier security, the government plans to make the fight against drug trafficking more effective on land and in the air. Armed Forces Minister Lieutenant General Pedro Rafael Pena Antonio made these declarations after his address during the Dominican Air Force's 62nd anniversary celebrations, headed by Vice President Rafael Alburquerque.
The Minister mentioned that they were awaiting the arrival of several pieces of equipment purchased in Spain at a cost of EUR9 million. The aim is to modernize the Specialized Frontier Security Corps (Cesfront) with the acquisition of the communications and transport equipment, plus the construction of 2 frontier posts and several mobile control positions.
Pena said that the "soft" loan approved by Congress would be paid in the long term. The Command and Control Center that will operate at the San Isidro Air Base will be inaugurated today. By next June the government expects to have the 8 Super Tucano aircraft in place to fight the illegal drug flights.
The increase in drug trafficking has caused a lot of worry in all sectors. The most recent case, the escape of drug trafficker Jose Figueroa Agosto and his accomplice Sobeida Felix Morel was described by President Leonel Fernandez himself as "a slap in the face to society."
