Cardinal Nicolas Lopez Rodriguez said there is a crisis of cultural values in Dominican society in that any criminal is easily regarded by society as an important person, so a successful drug trafficker can be circulating freely as a prestigious citizen. The Cardinal said that to be honest, fulfill one's duty and be responsible is not any good, and that one has to be a hoodlum ('tiguere') to get ahead. He said he has come to the conclusion that permissiveness in a society is not a guarantee for anyone, and that such a society will end up disintegrating. He said that any good-for-nothing could be a big shot.
The Cardinal criticized the lack of authority for putting the country's house in order and said that this is what has led to all the "modern barbarities" that are happening today, mentioning crime, violence, and spiritual and moral poverty. He made the statements during a speech on the subject of "Family and Vocation" at an event sponsored by the Friends of the St. Francis of Assisi seminary in San Francisco de Macoris. He called for the country's values to be rebuilt.
