Judges of the Chamber of Appeals of the Province of Santo Domingo have ordered preventive jail sentences for Miguel Alfonseca Soto, son of a deputy from Sanchez Ramirez province, Daniel de los Santos Gutierrez, Deivy Martinez Montas, Rafael Pimentel Beltre, Engel Mejia Manon, Carlos Manuel Zabala and Victor Manuel Fernandez who are suspected of murdering 4 men at Km. 29 of the Duarte Highway, in a drug-related case.
Judges Olga Herrera Carbuccia, Carmen Fortuna and Wendy Martinez revoked an order that had released the men on the grounds that there was not enough evidence to justify their preventive custody. The judges were acting in response to a petition by assistant prosecutors Pedro Galarza and Mayra Diaz who called for the revocation of the release order issued by replacement judge Rene del Rosario of the Third Court of Instruction on 12 January. The men were sent to La Victoria Jail.
Galarza says they have substantial proof that Martinez Moronta had called an inmate at La Victoria and planned the murder from the jail.
