In a recent visit to the DR, the United Nations Police Commissioner General Gerard Chaumont met with Dominican Police chief Major General Rafael Guillermo Guzman Fermin to call for cooperation between both countries in finding the 5,000 or so inmates who escaped from Haitian jails in the aftermath of January's earthquake. It is believed that some of them may have crossed over the border to the DR. Mulet said there is a group that is identified as "highly dangerous".
Generals Chaumont and Guzman Fermin agreed to increase cooperation to exchange information and training and to share installations. Chaumont said that intense ongoing efforts are under way to strengthen security in Haiti.
