Many questions are being raised about the so-called Jorge Puello, the alleged lawyer who is involved in the case of the 10 Americans accused of human trafficking and trying to take children out of Haiti without the proper paperwork.
The New York Times has published an article questioning the individual's identity, saying that Puello is being looked at as a possible suspect in a network of human trafficking of women and girls in Central America and the Caribbean. When the judge who was deliberating the case in Haiti found out about the investigation going on in El Salvador, he said that he would also look into the credentials of the people who were in his court just days before.
During a telephone interview last week, Puello denied ever having been to El Salvador. Part of the problem surrounding Puello is that he is not registered with the Dominican College of Lawyers, nor is he a member of the bar in Florida, despite both claims made by the man who was supposedly defending the Baptist missionaries. Puello said he worked for a law office in Santo Domingo that had 48 lawyers. However, the address he gave was not capable of accommodating that number of professionals, and his brother was very evasive about providing the location "of the other office". According to an article in Hoy, there are other questions surrounding Puello, such as his alleged leadership of the Sephardic Jewish Community in the Dominican Republic, which has been denied by local Jewish leaders.
Newspapers covering the story in Idaho, home state of the 10 Americans detained in Haiti after attempting to smuggle Haitian children into the DR, say his real name is Jorge Torres Puello, and describe his criminal track record. Born to a Dominican mother in Yonkers, New Jersey, according to the Idaho Statesman, he is the same person who is wanted in El Salvador for suspected involvement in a child prostitution ring.
The Idaho Statesman reports: "It's unclear how the 32-year-old Torres Puello became involved with the Central Valley Baptist Church in Meridian, or when he met the group's controversial leader, Laura Silsby. For the past 10 days, Torres Puello has been a visible figure in the church case, granting interviews with reporters about his role as legal adviser to the group".
