A public transport Mitsubishi Rosa mini-bus crashed into the Caribbean Sea around Km. 12 of Las Americas Expressway on Friday, 12 February at around 7pm, killing 11 passengers and injuring 15. News reports say most of the victims lived in the slum areas of El Valiente and Capo in the Santo Domingo East municipality. The vehicle's chassis was recovered and showed that the steering wheel was in order and the tires, though heavily treaded, still held their air. Driver Roberto Familia is suspected to have had a heart attack, according to witness accounts from Jonael Martinez and several passengers.
Members of the Navy, fire service and local fishermen helped rescue the injured during the evening.
Leonardo Perez, who lives near the site of the crash, and an unnamed motoconcho driver, helped rescue several of the victims from sea. Despite his heroic actions, the motoconchista reportedly had his motorcycle stolen during the confusion.
