In its editorial today, Diario Libre highlights the fact that the National Police is fighting crime on two fronts: within its ranks, it's engaged in a battle against crime and gossip among its officials and agents; and another external struggle against crime and politicians. Adriano Tejada writes today that the Police is a political organization, which responds according to which way the wind blows. It can be more or less repressive, depending on orders received, but its officers need to feel that they have the backing of their superiors to take risks in the fulfillment of their duty.


Diario Libre reports that in the first six months of the year, more than 80 policemen have been accused of crimes. The newspaper reports that less than 4,000 officers are patrolling city streets, despite the force having 32,000 members. The Police has benefited from RD$80 million invested in honing its investigative section, with officers sent for training in Colombia and the United States
