Mayor Roberto Salcedo promises to start a program to restore lighting to main city avenues this month, as reported in Listin Diario. A combination of vandalism and lack of maintenance has several of the city's main streets in the dark. EdeEste, one of the companies responsible for the restoration of power, particularly along the Malecon (east of Ave. Maximo Gomez), the Colonial City and Avenida Las Americas says it is coordinating with the government's security bodies to enhance security.
Listin Diario had reported on the problem recently. In an editorial today, the newspaper highlights that Dominicans are charged 5% of their power bills to pay for public lighting and that the service is not being provided. The editorial writer points out that the situation contributes to crime and traffic accidents.
