While the country in general is being affected by a drought, Puerto Plata province was hit by downpours that caused major damage in vulnerable areas over the last couple of days. Rivers and gullies (San Marcos, Los Dominguez, Camu and Munoz) flooded, leaving one person dead, and 73 dwellings destroyed, 1,800 affected and 1,000 families evacuated. The Meteorological Office (Onamet) has forecast that the rains will continue in the north. El Caribe reports that landslides affected the highway connecting Puerto Plata-Yasica-La Cumbre-Santiago, known as the Touristic Highway for its lovely views.
In Puerto Plata city some slum areas were affected, including Padre Granero, Bello Costero, Buenos Aires, Los Bordas, Las Mercedes, Los Callejones, Las Flores, Haiti, El Javillar, Aguas Negras, Los Coquitos, Los Rieles and Los Rieles de San Marcos, avenidas Manolo Tavarez Justo, Presidente Caamano and 30 de Marzo, La Canita, Playa Oeste, Los Dominguez, Las Tres Palmas and San Marcos.
Onamet director Gloria Ceballos said that the rains would continue to affect the northeast, north, northwest and border with Haiti.
