A 30% deficit in available generation is the explanation being given for the recent increase in blackouts. The Coordinating Office of the National Electricity Grid says that the generators had 1,303 megawatts available, while demand was at 1,872 megawatts.
Celso Marranzini, executive vice president of the State Electricity Corporation (CDEEE), said that the increase was caused by debts to the generators and delays in the arrival of the ship that delivers coal, as reported in Diario Libre. Marranzini said that the Ministry of Hacienda had delayed its payments so that the CDEEE could pay the generators. As reported in Diario Libre, plants out of operation are Itabo 2, Cepem in San Pedro de Macoris and San Felipe in Puerto Plata.
As reported in El Caribe, Marranzini promised that the blackouts would diminish as power plants go back into operation.
