In contrast with the general perception, Venezuela is not the DR's leading fuel supplier. Trinidad & Tobago is. Listin Diario reports that the Dominican government sources only 25% of all fuel from Venezuela. The purchases are made under the PetroCaribe agreement that allows for soft credit conditions.
The DR purchases most of its propane gas and natural gas from Trinidad & Tobago. Colombia and Mexico are also major suppliers of fuel.
The newspaper reports that under the PetroCaribe agreement, the country has a quota of up to 50,000 barrels a day of fuel, with financing of 1% annual interest and 20 years to pay. But in reality, the DR purchases around 25,000-30,000 barrels of fuel from Venezuela, says Rafael Lopez, director of the hydrocarbon department of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce.
Overall, the country purchases 135,000-140,000 42-gallon barrels a day of a range of fuels (propane, gasoline, diesel, kerosene, avtur and fuel oil).
