As of yesterday, the new area code 849 is in effect. It was assigned to the country last year and joins 809 and 829 as the nation's area codes. The Dominican Telecommunications Institute (INDOTEL) says that 849 goes into effect barely 5 years after the introduction of the 829 area code, which entered into use in 2005. Of these numbers, only 680,000 are still available, while all 809 lines have been assigned. Vargas said that in 2000, there were 1,559,000 fixed and mobile lines. But by the end of 2009, there were 9,598,517 lines in a country with approximately 10 million people.
Indotel director Jose Rafael Vargas says the 849 area code is a sign of the growth that telecommunications has maintained in the country, especially when it comes to mobile phones.
He said that 73.2% of the phone lines are assigned to cell phones, while 24.9% to fixed lines.
