The blackouts that are affecting the common folk in the barrios have now also reached the privileged circuit of the Presidential Palace, where yesterday afternoon the electricity supply went out for approximately 25 minutes.
The unusual event, which happened at 12:25pm through 12:50pm, occurred when First Lady Margarita Cedeno de Fernandez was hosting the presentation of her Strategic Plan 2010-2012 in the Blue Room. People inside the room were forced to endure the heat when the air-conditioners stopped working. Use of computers and fax machines was also disrupted. Dozens of employees met in the hallways to speculate about what had happened.
According to Presidential Administrative Minister Luis Manuel Bonetti, the blackout was caused by a failure of the exclusive electric line to the Presidential Palace and the generator did not enter into service, apparently due to a problem in the automatic transfer.
The Dominican Electricity Corporation (CDEEE) reported that the outage was caused by a problem with the Palamara-Hainamosa transmission line.
Yesterday morning there were long traffic jams along George Washington (Malecon) and Independencia Avenues because none of the stoplights were working due to powercuts and there were no Metropolitan Transport Authority (AMET) agents in sight. Yesterday at 4pm the total generation was 1,047 megawatts, and the demand was for 1,852 megawatts, which means that there was a 44% or 805-megawatt deficit.
