A protest calling for the completion of work on the highway to Palo Amarillo in Santiago province ended when some of the demonstrators got angry and the Police fired tear gas and buckshot, wounding 5 and arresting 40 people. Dozens more were affected by the tear gas.
The first to chain themselves to 2 vehicles in the middle of the road were 10 drivers of the "concho" lines "L" and "SP", led by their president Teobaldo Antonio Pichardo.
He said, "This is protest number 12, we have been beaten, but we are willing to die for this community, we ask President Leonel Fernandez to help us here." One of the protestors hit with buckshot was aged 16, together with 2 men identified as Francisco Fajardo and Felix Manuel who were hit in the legs and back.
After hours of arguing, the police agents, assisted by the elite SWAT unit, began to forcefully remove the demonstrators, but this led the women to come out in support of the protestors as they were carried away in trucks. In the tense situation, a lieutenant fired a shot, but no one was hurt. At least 20 people were treated for the effects of the tear gas.
