As reported in Clave newspaper, Economy Minister Temistocles Montas says that the Dominican government will be spending 1.03% of its Gross Domestic Product in Haiti. This could mean more than RD$18.65 billion. Public Health Minister Bautista Rojas Gomez says that on health expenditure for Haitian victims, vaccinations and equipping hospitals alone, the government has spent RD$800 million to date. He said that much of the spending is aimed at strengthening health services along the border. He said that the government has stepped up its vaccination programs in response to concerns about health problems amongst Haitian migrants.
Montas says that for many years Haiti has been receiving aid through non-governmental organizations, the Haitian government and institutional mechanisms, but its state of extreme poverty has not changed. "Now, the discussions are focusing on the factors that have prevented all the aid from creating a base from which Haiti could develop and become a viable country," he told Clave.
