The latest episode in the case of Puerto Rican fugitive drug baron Jose David Figueroa Agosto, which is being dubbed a soap opera by some news commentators, is the list confiscated from Ivanovich Smester Ginebra. Smester Ginebra was sent to Najayo jail while under investigation for his links with Figueroa Agosto and for money laundering. The list refers to alleged payouts of US$874,000, including US$175,000 in bribes to judges and state prosecutors, as reported in Diario Libre. The newspaper says the authorities are investigating whether the order to distribute the money had come after the drug baron went on the run.
The list includes entries like: US$50,000 and US$53,000 for Samy, US$250,000 for IND, US$10,000 for Mary - who is also down for another US$50,000, US$40,000 for Juan, US$53,000 and US$29,000 for a woman, US$29,000 to purchase euros and US$12,000 for a bail payment. Other payments were listed as being for loans, fixing up apartments, paintings and purchase of doors.
Smester is accused of being a front for Figueroa Agosto, who was sentenced to 209 years in prison in Puerto Rico, before he forged a judge's order for his release.
