Yesterday, 115 Dominicans arrived at Las Americas International Airport after being deported from the United States, having served their jail sentences. Listin Diario says this is the second largest single drop of deported convicts. The new arrivals have served sentences for drug trafficking, homicide, armed robbery and other federal crimes.
The United States Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) chartered a plane to fly in the group. On 10 November, the INS deported 118 Dominican convicts. Listin Diario reports that from January 2005 to February 2010, the INS has deported 9,931 Dominicans. Almost half of them had been convicted of drug related crimes. 5,260 are for robbery, sexual assault, illegal possession of weapons, fraud and domestic violence. Most of the deportees are aged between 25 and 40, and 80% are men. Most of their sentences ranged from 5 to 15 years.
