There are 265 FM radio stations, 145 AM stations and 20 short wave stations in the DR. According to the Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (Indotel), the DR is one of the countries with the most radio stations in relation to the size of its territory. There is a 410/48,000 ratio of 0.85 stations per square kilometer, or a radio station per square kilometer, reports journalist Arismendy Calderon in today's Hoy. It is estimated that 62.3% of the population, or almost 6 million inhabitants have access to radio. Prominent radio broadcaster Teo Veras recently published a 932-page book on telecommunications in the DR, where he tells that radio broadcasting had its start in the DR in 1926 when engineer Frank Hatton Guerrero built a small AM transmitter and registered it as HIRC. FM broadcasts started in 1978 with Radio Universal that was on the air 24/7.
