President Leonel Fernandez and Vice-President Rafael Alburquerque led the dignitaries who paid homage to the Dominican flag as part of a series of events held yesterday to celebrate the foundation of the nation and the 166th anniversary of Dominican independence.
During a ceremony held at the Altar de la Patria, Juan Daniel Balcacer, the president of the Permanent Commission for Patriotic Commemorations (CPEP), reminded the audience that on 27 February each year the Dominican people commemorate 2 important events in the nation's history: the proclamation of the Republic and the first use of the national flag. He recounted how during the night of 27 February 1844, after the proclamation of the nation-state named Dominican Republic by Juan Pablo Duarte and after the shot fired by national hero Francisco del Rosario Sanchez, the rebels hoisted the nation's flag for the first time.
