A shocking number of children drop out of public primary school, according to the National Education Forum. For every 100 students who begin primary school only 48 finish the eighth grade and barely 25 go on to enroll in high school.
The president of the National Education Forum (FENA) Andres Matos Sena described the situation as serious, and warned that if it continues in this way the country will fail to attain integrated levels of human and economic development. Matos Sena used the occasion of the Day of the Student to call on the government and the private sector to seek practical ways to reduce student dropouts.
Matos Sena said that the 50% dropout rate amongst university students is just a reflection of the same phenomenon that occurs at the elementary level. He said that there has to be some way of bringing about financial or special assistance programs that will allow these children and young adults to stay in school. He suggested another program to encourage students who had already dropped out to return to school.
Matos Sena said that there was no need to create new public institutions, but that there was a need to get the private sector more involved.
According to Diario Libre, there are 10,986 schools and 2.6 million schoolchildren in the country.
