The Dominican Customs authorities are warning that they will apply "drastic" measures to prevent food products or any other kind of product from being smuggled into the Dominican Republic from Haiti.
Customs director Rafael Camilo said: "We are going to be strict. The aid that arrives in Haiti should stay in Haiti, because the products that get to the neighboring country should not come into the Dominican Republic."
Camilo spoke to reporters during a tour of the border region earlier this week. He said that Dominican Customs agents had already caught a shipment of canned goods coming from Haiti.
He stated the obvious: "A product that enters Haiti free of charge, cannot enter the Dominican Republic to compete with Dominican products..."
Camilo also discussed the progress of the new bi-national marketplace in Dajabon, and he said that the launch of the full-scale marketplace would depend on the arrival of funds from the European Union.
